The returning Division III state champion (twice) and returning Ken Cole champion was Brusly's Trevor Schermer.  The Panthers' junior brought a 27-4 record into the weekend, with losses only to Holy Cross' George Benoit, Rummel's Rick LaCava and a MacArthur, OK, wrestler in the Deep South Bayou Duals.  Schermer finished third at the LA Classic. But the USA Wrestling logo was not the only thing tattooed on his back.  So was a bulls-eye for the other wrestlers

Parkway's #5 Austin Smith tries to gain control over Sulphur's #4 Trey Duhon in a 132 lbs. quarterfinal match.  Duhon came back and won by a fall in 4:11.	Brusly's Trevor Schermer needed 4:51 to claim a fall over Comeaux's Kole Miller.

Semifinals

Schermer pinned his first three opponents prior to his quarterfinals match.  His opponent, 4th-seeded sophomore Trey Duhon of Sulphur, also pinned his first three opponents, but in a shorter combined amount of time and including a #5 seed.

That did not bother Schermer.  As he is wont to do, Schermer "stalked" him like a cat while on his feet, dropping on his knees until he saw an opportunity to spring.  When those opportunities arrived he pounced on them, and once on top used legs rides to twist his opponents into submission. Duhon, 19-9 coming into the tournament, could not stop Schermer's attack, but stayed around the entire six minutes, after which Schermer had earned a 14-4 win. 

3rd-seeded Tristan Lee of Teurlings Catholic had a 28-7 record which included wins over some impressive names such as North Vermillion's Anthony Scalisi, Brusly's Wyatt LeJeune, and he split a pair of matches with Lafayette's Adrian Ducote.  The junior's opponent was 2nd-seeded Jackie Robinson of Jesuit. While only having a record of 14-14, five of the senior Blue Jays' losses came to wrestlers from Texas.

At the end of regulation both wrestlers were tied at five points apiece.  Neither could score a takedown in the "Sudden Victory" round. Both rode each other out through the first two overtime periods.  In the third overtime, Robinson had the choice and took the bottom position.  After eight minutes of wrestling, Robinson finally stood up and spun away from Lee with 23 seconds left (upper right photo).

Duhon and Lee pinned their ways into the consolation finals, in which Duhon scored a fall in 4:19 to earn third place.

Finals

Schermer again started off "stalking" his opponent in the finals, and it led to a single-leg dive which merited a takedown.  Schermer came close to turning Robinson with his legs, but the period ended 2-0.  Despite the low score, Schermer dominated the first period and seemed to be in control, and he chose to start the second period standing. 

Robinson was able to stop a Schermer shot with a quarter-nelson.  Schermer rose against the quarter-nelson, and Robinson let go of it, dropped under to a single leg and switched that to a double-leg takedown.  He then used a cross-face cradle and put Schermer on his back for three nearfall points.  By the time Schermer got out of the pinning combination, he was down 5-2 with 35 seconds remaining in the second round.  Not wanting to waste time, Schermer escaped, took Robinson down and scored three nearfall points to surge ahead 8-5 at the end of the second period.

Robinson was in a scoring position on bottom at the start of the third period, but Schermer tied him up by leg-riding.  Schermer scored another two nearfall points and had a 10-5 victory to repeat as a Ken Cole champion.

It would have taken a major setback for Schermer to relinquish his #1 seed in the Division III state championships.  Robinson will probably remain a fifth seed due to his loss on Wednesday to Brother Martin's Mason Williams.
